Stripe Terminal for Point of Sale

Created: 6/2/2026 | Last updated: 6/11/2026 | Tags: pos, stripe, terminal, payments, code-backed-rewrite

Stripe Terminal lets your store accept in-person card payments from Storepass Point of Sale using a Stripe card reader. Use it when you want checkout payments to go through a physical reader instead of recording card payments manually.

Setup has three parts: create or finish your Stripe account connection, purchase a compatible reader from Stripe, then register the reader to the correct store location in Point of Sale Settings.

  • Use Stripe Terminal for tap, insert, or swipe card payments in Point of Sale.
  • Use one reader per checkout counter or register where possible.
  • Use Stripe's official hardware shop so the reader is prepared for Stripe Terminal.
  • Use the Stripe Connect setup in Storepass before configuring reader locations.

Before starting

  1. Confirm you have access to Point of Sale Settings.
  2. Confirm your Shopify locations are synced and have complete physical addresses.
  3. Decide how many checkout stations need a reader.
  4. Make sure each reader will have reliable Wi-Fi or Ethernet access at the counter.
  5. Have the business owner or authorized representative available for Stripe account verification.
Stripe may ask for business details, representative information, tax details, bank account information for payouts, and identity verification documents. The exact requirements depend on your country, business type, and Stripe's verification review.

Purchase

Purchase Stripe Terminal hardware directly through Stripe. Stripe's hardware order documentation explains that readers bought through Stripe are pre-certified and loaded with Stripe's payment applications and secure encryption keys.

  • Where to buy: Open the Stripe Terminal hardware shop from your Stripe Dashboard.
  • Compare readers: Review Stripe's Terminal devices page for the readers available in your country.
  • Ordering help: Review Stripe's hardware order guide for order status, shipping, and return details.
  • Reader type: Storepass is built for internet-connected smart readers. Stripe's smart reader documentation lists readers such as Stripe Reader S700/S710 and BBPOS WisePOS E as compatible with server-driven integrations.
  • Recommended quantity: Order one reader for each checkout counter that will take card payments, plus any docks, power adapters, or accessories needed for your counter layout.
Do not buy used readers or third-party readers unless Stripe confirms they can be registered to your Stripe account. A reader must be registered to your Stripe account before Storepass can use it.

Create your Stripe account

  1. Go to Point of Sale Settings.
  2. Find the Stripe Connect section.
  3. If you do not have a Stripe account connected yet, click Create Stripe Account.
  4. Complete the Stripe-hosted onboarding form.
  5. Return to Storepass when Stripe sends you back to Point of Sale Settings.
  6. Click Refresh Status if the page does not update automatically.

Stripe onboarding may not approve the account instantly. The Stripe Connect section shows whether payments and payouts are enabled, plus how many requirements are currently due, past due, or pending verification.

  • Onboarding: Continue the Stripe form until all required information is submitted.
  • Restricted: Stripe still needs information or verification before all payment or payout features are available.
  • Active: Storepass can show the Stripe Terminal setup section and you can configure readers.
You cannot configure Stripe Terminal readers in Storepass until the Stripe Connect status is active.

Configure locations

  1. Go to Point of Sale Settings.
  2. Find the Stripe Terminal section.
  3. Review each Shopify location listed in the table.
  4. For each physical store location that will use a reader, click Add as Terminal Location.
  5. Click Sync after adding locations if the reader or location list looks stale.

Terminal locations connect your Storepass/Shopify locations to Stripe. This helps Stripe associate a reader with the correct physical store address.

Register readers

  1. Power on the Stripe reader and connect it to the store network.
  2. Open the reader settings and generate a registration or pairing code.
  3. In Point of Sale Settings, find the matching Terminal Location.
  4. Click Register Reader.
  5. Enter the registration code shown on the reader.
  6. Enter a clear label, such as Front Counter or Buylist Counter.
  7. Submit the form and wait for the reader to appear in the Readers column.

Stripe's reader connection documentation explains that smart readers can be registered with a registration code, serial number, or hardware order in the Stripe Dashboard. Storepass uses the registration code flow in Point of Sale Settings.

Registration codes expire. If Storepass says the code is invalid, generate a new code on the reader and try again.

Payment methods

  1. Go to the Reader payment methods area inside the Stripe Terminal section.
  2. Keep Card (tap, insert, or swipe) enabled. This is always on.
  3. Enable any region-specific methods your store should accept, such as Interac (Canadian debit) for eligible Canadian Stripe accounts.
  4. Click Save payment methods.

Use in Point of Sale

  1. Open Point of Sale.
  2. Add items to the cart and open checkout.
  3. Enter the card amount in the card payment field.
  4. If more than one reader is available, choose the reader for this checkout station.
  5. Click the checkout button.
  6. Wait for the Waiting on Reader prompt.
  7. Ask the customer to tap, insert, or swipe their card on the reader.
  8. Do not close the checkout until Storepass confirms the reader payment completed.

When a Stripe Terminal payment succeeds, Storepass records the Stripe payment reference with the POS sale and includes the terminal reference on the receipt for reconciliation.

Monitor

  1. Use Sync in the Stripe Terminal section to refresh location and reader state.
  2. Check the badge next to each reader to confirm whether it is online or offline.
  3. Open the Stripe Dashboard when you need to review deposits, payout status, account verification, or Stripe payment records.
  4. Use the receipt's Stripe Terminal reference to match a POS sale to the Stripe payment.

Troubleshooting

  • Stripe Connect is not active: Click Continue Onboarding and finish the missing Stripe requirements. Refresh status afterward.
  • No Shopify locations show: Sync your store locations first, then return to Point of Sale Settings.
  • Reader is offline: Check power, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and run diagnostics from the reader settings.
  • Registration code failed: Generate a fresh code on the reader and register it again.
  • Payment timed out or was canceled: Confirm the reader is online, cancel the reader action if needed, then retry the payment.
  • Card was declined: Ask the customer for another payment method and retry the checkout.

Stripe's Terminal network requirements explain the connectivity checks readers use, including DNS, Stripe connectivity, Terminal events connectivity, Wi-Fi signal, battery health, and hardware status.

After setup

  1. Run a small real transaction to confirm the reader, receipt, and Stripe Dashboard record match.
  2. Train cashiers to wait for the reader prompt before asking customers to present a card.
  3. Keep readers charged and connected to a reliable network.
  4. Review Stripe payout timing and verification messages in the Stripe Dashboard during the first few days of use.
